COMMENTAIRES
Richard Smallwood brings an air of sophistication to every project. He has created some of the most complex yet memorable gospel pieces of his generation.
THE PRAISE & WORSHIP SONGS OF RICHARD SMALLWOOD features a mix of live and studio recordings, though 11 out of the 16 tracks are live. The music on this "best of" album is a combination of different gospel styles, from Baptist choir music to modern R&B to classically influenced works (the orchestral prelude "Procession of the Levites [Orchestral Prelude]" is the most obvious example of the latter). However, the somber hymnal "Psalm 8" also draws from European liturgical music. Despite the variety of styles presented, THE PRAISE & WORSHIP SONGS is easily recognized as gospel music, and each track celebrates Jesus Christ through soaring choir melodies and inspired lyrics of praise. Highlights include the rapturous "Holy Thou Art God" and the euphoric "The Highest Praise," both of which are performed in the Baptist tradition.
